June 15th, 2023 Prof. Thomas J. Csordas “To Think Like an Exorcist: The Somatic Semiotics of Demonic Diagnostics”

We invite you to attend an upcoming lecture titled “To Think Like an Exorcist: The Somatic Semiotics of Demonic Diagnostics” by Thomas J. Csordas, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego. This lecture will explore the resurgence of demonic possession and exorcism in the Roman Catholic Church, based on Csordas’ comparative ethnographic study in the United States and Italy. The lecture will shed light on the dual nature of exorcism as both a benevolent exercise of paternalistic care and an ideological mechanism for asserting patriarchal authority.

The lecture will be held both in-person and online via Zoom on Thursday, June 15th 2023, 6:15-7:45 pm (c.t.).
