Minoritization of Muslims: A Social History of China’s Regulatory System over the Hui

CAS-E alumnus Dr. Li Gang (CAS-E Fellow 2024/25) is Principle Investigator of the DFG (German Research Foundation) project “Minoritization of Muslims: A Social History of China’s Regulatory System over the Hui.” Dr. Li Gang won a Research Grant of the duration of three years (2025-2028) to conduct his project at the FAU Forschungszentrum für Islam und Recht in Europa (FAU EZIRE).

Dr. Gang Li will be investigating the social history of the regulatory systems of the Chinese Party-State, that is, the legal, political, and practical strategies employed by the Chinese Communist Party in governing Hui Muslims and their practice of Islam, focusing on the period from 1976 to 2012. With this project, he will be looking at: 1) what the CCP’s regulatory systems governing Islam and the Hui Muslims are; 2) how the regulatory systems have impacted the Hui and their practice of Islam; as well as 3) which historical, cultural, and international factors have contributed to the Party’s approaches to regulating the Hui and their practice of Islam.
