PRISM – Program in the study of mysticism (Tampere University)
Throughout history, countless people have experienced a not-fully describable union with ultimate reality that is at once recognized in all religions and yet is its least understood aspect. Building on popular and post-critique academic interest, PRISM is a five-year Program at Tampere University, Finland seeking to re-place mysticism in the study of religion. Supported by the global philanthropy, Templeton Religion Trust, the program works from 2025 through 2029 to (i)generate new information about mysticism, (ii) galvanize scholarly expertise in the field, and (iii) stimulate popular interest aligned with new academic developments. The program works toward these objectives by awarding grants to leading researchers and teams worldwide, as well as by running a program core at Tampere to conceptualize new theories, convene scholarly expertise on joint platforms, and communicate publicly to attract further interest.
