The research project Translating the Ineffable: Sino-Muslim Engagement with Esoteric Knowledge across Han Kitab and Menhuan Networks, supported by a grant from Templeton Religion Trust and awarded via the Program in the Study of Mysticism (PRISM) at Tampere University, invites applications for the position of Research Assistant (part-time, 20 hours per week) for a fixed term of 12 months, starting January 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be based at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Kolleg-Forschungsgruppe “Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices from a Global Perspective,” Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences – Erlangen (CAS-E).
Profile of the ideal candidate:
- Holds an M.A. degree in Religious Studies, Sinology, or a related discipline
- Has proficiency in English and Chinese; additional knowledge of Arabic or Persian is an asset
- Possesses familiarity with Chinese culture and religions and/or the study of mysticism
Primary responsibilities include:
- Collecting and analyzing research materials
- Assisting with the organization of academic workshops
- Supporting project-related communication (e.g., newsletters, reports, etc.)
