Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art, dance, and ritual that combines elements of fight, dance, play, and music, where body performance is the cornerstone of cosmological knowledge and what teachers call tradition. Building on my extensive fieldwork experience within Afro-Brazilian capoeira groups, this project explores a unique aspect of the current esoteric meaning of power in capoeira Angola groups in Europe. Specifically, I will focus on capoeira communities in Berlin, Warsaw, and London, where the transmission of knowledge is crucial in understanding capoeira as a traditional practice, particularly the intricate relationship between Brazilian teachers and students. I argue that there are certain aspects of capoeira that teachers, known as mestres, cannot teach. They explain the difficulties of learning deception as a physical technique and as a way of being, a form of life. Finally, I analyze how deception connects with esoteric power as a form of not-knowing.
