Research Project: Dancing to the tree of life: an Ethnography of a Neo-Amerindian Movement

Region: USA (Arizona) and Europe

This projects explores a neo-Amerindian movement that operates in the US, Europe, and Australia. It has been found or re-invented in the late 1970s and claims to teach traditional ceremonies derived from ‘esoteric’ branches of the former religions of the Navajo, Sioux, Hopi and other native American tribes. The movement is initiatory, most teachings are oral, and its manifold esoteric practices are only revealed incrementally to initiates over the course of many years. Through fieldwork and participatory observation, the project explores the complex symbolism of the movement, its theories and ceremonies, the question of its ‘traditionality’, and the perceived efficacy of its practices.
