Research Project: Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices in the Persian Gulf Area

Region: Persian Gulf Area

During the fieldwork I carried out for my PhD studies, I discovered that supernaturals have an important role in people’s daily lives. Along with the Zar ritual, script writing, omening based on Quran and Hafiz, talismans, or discovering secrets by looking in the mirror or water are some examples of practices used in Hormozgan and many other areas in Iran to communicate and get help from supernaturals in predicting and changing the future, finding secrets, solving problems, or treating diseases. Now that I have finished my Ph.D., I would like to carry out an ethnographic fieldwork in the Persian Gulf region to answer questions, such as: What are some examples of esoteric practices in this area? How do these practices and rituals impact people’s lives? Where do these rituals and practices get their legitimacy from? Along with ethnographic research, I may speak to practitioners and their clients from all around the world through online interviews because many practitioners are active on Facebook, Instagram, and their individual websites.
